Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, “You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.” (John 11:49-50 NIV)
He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. (John 11:51-52 NIV)
Before the first 2 verses above, the high priests just got word that many people were believing in Jesus because of the miracle of resurrection that he had done on Lazarus. They were anxious and called a "council meeting". In that meeting, they were anxious that the nation would be destroyed by the Roman empire that ruled over them at that time. Hence, they had discussed to kill Jesus.
As I read this portion, I was reminded of how the same priest who once prophesied that Jesus would be the Messiah and die for their nation as well as the whole world, but afterwards, he made a statement to kill Jesus. But I am reminded that God can use anyone! He can use anyone to fulfill the destiny in which He has predestined for the World. God is the Creator of everything and every living being in this world. Thank God for using us who sin, who cannot tell right from wrong.
You are a unique and special being, predestined by God to fulfill the purposes He has for you who believe in Him! It doesn't matter what you have done in the past, it doesn't define who you are gonna be! Know that He who created all things and all people is in control and is sovereign over all.
